This development didn't emerge from nowhere. The AI agent market has been building momentum since OpenAI's function-calling capabilities made it feasible for language models to interact with real business systems. Companies like Anthropic, with Claude's tool-use features, and open-source projects have proven that AI systems can competently execute tasks within defined parameters. Early enterprise responses suggest genuine interest, though with caveats. The concern isn't capability—modern AI agents demonstrably work—but governance. Who's responsible when an AI agent makes decisions affecting customer data? How do you audit autonomous actions? These aren't technical problems but organizational ones. Companies moving Slack toward the center of operations are implicitly accepting new operational risks. That tension will define adoption curves.
